Alternative energy is defined as sources of energy that are alternatives to conventional fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas). These alternative energy sources have low carbon dioxide emissions and so help slow global warming when used as an alternative to fossil fuels. There is considerable debate about whether nuclear energy should be included. The same applies to burning of wood for energy which contributes carbon dioxide, but from a renewable resource. There is a lot of debate about the concept of 'Unusable Carbon' that must be left in the ground if temperature control targets are to be met. Some of the types of alternative energy are: solar, wind, wave, tidal, algae, biogas, biomass, alcohol, geothermal, hydrogen and artificial photosynthesis. Fusion power offers a future energy sources that is almost unlimited.
